On second reference, museum of art or art museum.

states

Spell out the names of the 50 U.S. states when they stand alone in text: central Kansas. Use AP abbreviations when used with the name of a city: Fayetteville, Ark. Use postal abbreviations when used as part of an address: The University of Kansas, Lawrence, KS 66045. See state names and datelines in the Associated Press Stylebook.

In general, the state name does not appear after Kansas towns in text unless there is a possibility of confusion with another city of the same name. Kansas City and Independence are among Kansas towns that should carry state abbreviations. Pittsburg need not be identified as being a Kansas city, because the Pennsylvania city is spelled Pittsburgh.
